Mission Statement

The Winner fire Department is a Volunteer Department. When someone dials 9-1-1 we are notified by pager, and we leave our homes and jobs to go to where ever we are needed. We have to drive to the fire station in our personal vehicles to get the necessary equipment and fire trucks.  When you see a vehicle on the road with a flashing  light please pull over. The house we are going to may be yours.

The Winner Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1912.  Currently the Winner Volunteer Fire Dept. has 30 members who are dedicated to serving their community.  These are volunteer who put their lives on hold at the sound of a tone on their pager to help others in the Community. They leave their families and what ever they are doing to make sure that our community and the people in it are provided with the best emergency

service possible. These volunteers also meet twice a month for training and a business meeting to make sure that they are ready when you need them.  The Winner Volunteer Fire Dept. serves approximately  1700 square miles of Tripp County,  South Dakota including approx. 6400 residents.  The Winner Volunteer Fire Dept is dispatched from the winner City Police Dept. Events

The Winner VFD has an annual dance in the spring with donations used to purchase equipment. They have an open house each year during Fire Prevention week.  Throughout the year different members give classes at the local grade school and give tours of the fire hall.  We purchased a fire cam from donations received from the community. This fire cam is used to find & rescue fire victims.  It is also used to find hot spots. The Department moved into a new facility in Oct. 2003.

Fire Cam

With the donations received from the community we have purchased a fire cam.  We use the fire cam to help us find and rescue victims of fires faster.  It also enables us to find the main body of a fire faster in a structure.  It also helps us keep damage of a structure to a minimum.  This camera can also be used to help find lost people at night in big open spaces.  It operates by reading the differences in temperature. It is so sensitive that it will show where someone has already been.  If a person was laying on a couch, you could see where they were, because it takes awhile for the temperatures to dissipate.

Fire Suppression

The methods of the Winner Fire Department of extinguishment have been refined over the years through education in fire sciences.  Although the best method of extinguishment is a quick interior attack if possible.  This is made possible with the improved personal safety equipment that today's firefighters use.  Bunker gear and breathing apparatus also help us get closer to the fire for short periods of time.  Also with the purchase of a fire cam, which enables us to see through smoke, we will be able to find victims in structure fires more rapidly.
